Lost, Found & Adoptable

Over the years we have had a number of animals brought to us or fielded phone calls for people who have either lost an animal, found an animal or are trying to re-home an animal in a humane and conscientious manner. We are providing this area of our web site as a Community Resource to help provide a place for people to post information about the animals they are trying to re-unite or re-home.

We do welcome postings on animals that need extra help (such as seniors and animals with medical conditions) and animals in the community that need to be re-homed and are not in the shelter by listing them on our "From Woof to Home" page on Facebook.

The listings are also open to the much appreciated people who are fostering animals for local organisations and need an online posting to help get these animals into their forever homes. Please note that our adoption package is extended to the animals being rehomed and to any adopted animals.

If you are interested in adopting check these Local Rescue Organisations. Bolded names are hosted regularly at The Big Bad Woof (check events for dates and times).

If your animal is lost these are other sites in the community to check:

Steps to take when a pet is lost:

  • Don’t panic.
  • File a Lost Report immediately by calling (202) 576-6664.  Be prepared to answer questions about the animal’s breed, size, description, and veterinary history.  Make sure to tell the person taking the report where the animal was lost, if it was not lost from a home address.
  • Look for the animal.  Most animals will respond to their owner’s call, even if the voice is far away.
  • If there is a neighborhood e-mail list, write an emergency message.
  • Make a flyer (include a picture), to distribute to neighbors, veterinary clinics, businesses, and animal shelters.
  • Visit the Animal Control Facility regularly to check for the lost pet.
  • Once the animal is located, contact the Animal Control Facility to cancel the lost report.

There are also several tracker services in the area, which we have known to be very useful according to our customers. We suggest posting on at the local shelters, veterinary offices and also on PetAmberAlert.com.
