Fish Oil Supplements

Fish oil is one of the most popular dietary supplements purchased by pet owners for dogs and cats. Like fish oil supplements for humans, fish oil for cats contains omega-3 fatty acids, which can help structure cell membranes and provide energy. The body cannot produce these fatty acids on its own, so the only way to obtain these nutrients is to ingest them. Cats require omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil; deficiencies in this nutrient can lead to skin abnormalities, reproductive issues, and other health failures.

"According to board-certified veterinary nutritionisy Dr. Donna Raditic, the anti-inflammatory effects of EPA & DHA in dogs with various diseases including kidney disease, cardiovscular disorders, osteoarthritis, atopy (skin condiitons) and inflammatory bowel disease have been evaluated, and the dose ranges from 50 - 220,g/kg (110 -485mg / lb) of body weight. The highest dose is recommended for osteoarthritis in dogs not otherwse being supplemented. If your dog isn't eating any other sources of Omega-3's (like sardines), consider a maintenance dose of 75mg per kg(165 Mg per lb) of body weight for healthy animals. These doses are based on adding the milligrams of EPA and DHA per supplemental capsule or milliliters per liquid.
