Melatonin has been a mainstream supplement and is a staple for a wide range of people, and pets!
What is melatonin?
It's actually a brain hormone generated in the pineal gland. We naturally make it but sometimes need to augment what’s already there with synthetic melatonin, or phytomelatonin which is derived from plants.
Melatonin is also in some foods. Its precursor is the essential amino acid tryptophan, which is the element in turkey that’s responsible for so many Thanksgiving Day naps. The body absorbs tryptophan from the bloodstream and sends it to the pineal gland and melatonin levels increase.
So what is melatonin used for?
When taken for sleep-wake cycle regulation one becomes sleepy (not drowsy) usually within 10-15 minutes. This is true in the daytime and the nighttime, making it good for your jet lag when you travel as well as Fido’s long car ride.
Newer reports are showing evidence that Melatonin supports the immune system, and it regrows hair in dogs.
Melatonin is meant to be used short-term to help get you back on your desired sleep schedule.
