Our tenets for renal diets include high moisture, low phospohorus, high quality animal protein in moderation, and supplementation of anti-inflammatory immune boosting supplements like fish oils, raw goat's milk, and supportive herbal remedies.

Cats are obligate carnivores, meaning their biologically appropriate diet should consist of protein and fat from animal sources, and they have no carbohydrate requirements in their diet. When renal issues call for a lowering of protein levels in the diet, the coloric deficit should be filled primarily by a higher fat content rather than the inclusion of carbs.

Your cat's renal health will determine what the best nutrition solution is for them. Cats with with acute kidney issues may not need a specifically phosphorous-restricted food, but will benefit from eating recipes naturally low in phosphorus, still within the range to be considered a complete and balanced diet.

Many of the diets suggested above are not considered complete and balanced and are not suitable for cats without renal issues, as phosphorus is a required mineral for healthy cats. When you and your vet decide that your cat's kidney issues require a restricted phosphorus diet, these recipes will be considered appropriate for your cat.
