Pick-up locations for fresh soups and other local farm goods

Many of our loyal customers know that we are not just a local independent pet store. We have a commitment to the community to provide access to fresh, local foods for BOTH humans and their animal companions. To that end, we offer local farm goods and fresh, locally produced soup at or near our store in Takoma DC.

 5 a Day CSA ~

Community Sponsored Agriculture-Farmers and Families Supporting Each Other through Food Justice

5 A DAY CSA is a multi-farm sustainable CSA based at Muirkirk Farm in Beltsville, Md.. The farm uses organic growing practices to produce nutrient dense berries and vegetables from non-GMO and heirloom seeds.  Their 2017 CSA will have a pickup location on the farm where you can also purchase local products at their farm stand.

The Wellness Boxes are filled with local and organically grown vegetables and  berries as well as local tree fruit. What better way to say that you care or love someone than to give them organically grown food to help them  enjoy their healthiest life possible. Please note- each box ranges from $25 -$60 depending on the size. You can purchase more than one box.

Hungry Harvest

Hungry Harvest LogoHungry Harvest believes that no food should go to waste and no person should go hungry. That’s why we source, hand pack and securely deliver delicious boxes of recovered produce a weekly and bi-weekly basis. For every delivery, we subsidize 1-2 lbs of produce for families living in food deserts through our Produce in a SNAP sites. We currently deliver in Maryland, DC, Northern Virginia, Philly, and South Jersey.

Other local farm goods

We also buy fresh local marrow and soup bones, organ meats, and other items from local farms and businesses including Smith Meadows Farm, Congressional Seafood and Ayrshire Farm which are available in our freezer sections. These items are intended to be used for dogs and cats, and many are organic and the same items you get from local Farmer’s Markets.

Many of the farms also offer Seasonal CSA’s (Community Sponsored Agriculture) or sell a variety of goods at local markets, so please check their websites for more information.

Our food system is broken. We’re trying to fix it. Soupergirl believes in real, responsible food. We support our local farming community. We compost. We use wind energy. We treat our staff respectfully and ask the same of our vendors. We cook healthfully and plant based.

What does this long
and growing list of endeavors mean? The planet wins. The consumer wins. The community wins. The farmers win. The laborers win. That’s a lot of winning. As we grow, we believe we can make even bigger changes. One spoonful at a time.
