Therapy & Service Animals

Canine Companions for Independence

Founded in 1975, Canine Companions for Independence® is a non-profit organization that enhances the lives of people with disabilities by providing highly trained assistance dogs and ongoing support to ensure quality partnerships.

The assistance dogs we breed, raise and train aren’t just the ears, hands and legs of their human partners. They’re also goodwill ambassadors and often, their best friends. They open up new opportunities and new possibilities, and spread incredible joy. We unite people with dogs in a powerful program that leads to greater independence and confidence.

Fidos for Freedom

Our mission is to enhance the quality of life for people in the Washington-Baltimore Metropolitan community by providing specially trained hearing dogs, service dogs, Veterans with PTSD and therapy dogs.

Fidos also educates the public about individuals with disabilities and about the benefits of assistance dogs and therapy dogs and the work that these specially trained dogs do for individuals with disabilities, children with reading difficulties, and patients in health care facilities.

National Capital Therapy Dogs

National Capital Therapy Dogs, Inc. (NCTD) is a non-profit, all-volunteer organization that provides animal-assisted therapy and other activities to people in health facilities, shelters, schools and libraries. Established in 1990, NCTD has steadily expanded its operations, and is now recognized as one of the top animal-assisted therapy organizations in the country.

NCTD provides a full range of therapy services to our approved facilities. The people we visit include medical and psychiatric patients, stroke and trauma clients, residents in facilities for the elderly, palliative care patients, abused women and their children, homeless families and troubled teenagers.

We also have an active R.E.A.D. Program which encourages children to read to our dogs in order to improve their reading motivation, fluency and confidence.

NCTD holds frequent training and evaluation classes throughout the Washington DC area. Please visit our Calendar of Events for further information.

People. Animals. Love. (PAL)

PAL is a non profit organization that leverages the power of the human-animal bond to provide for the Washington DC Metropolitan area. In our Pet Visit Program, wagging tails and wet noses ease the loneliness of the elderly and comfort the sick. Warm, gazing eyes help early readers feel comfortable reading out loud when dogs visit libraries.

In our PAL Camp and PAL Club, hundreds of lower-income children deepen their natural connection to the amazing animal kingdom with a rich Animal Studies program that includes lessons, books, animal visits, field trips, animal care and assemblies. Learning and caring for animals allows for our most vulnerable youth to make social, emotional and academic gains.

We even have a Bereavement Support line for those pet owners struggling to cope with the passing of their furry companion.

Pets for Vets

Many brave troops return home with scars – both seen and unseen – that make it difficult to transition back to civilian life. At the same time, millions of wonderful companion animals wait in shelters for a forever home. Pets for Vets is the bridge that brings them together.

When a Veteran is matched with the right pet, both lives change for the better. The Veteran saves the animal and welcomes him/her into a loving home. The pet provides the Veteran with unconditional love and support, easing stress, depression, loneliness and anxiety. Together, they share a Super Bond™ that provides them both with a whole new “leash” on life.
