Treating Obesity: The Silent Killer

Unlike humans, dogs and cats have a propensity to pack on pounds virtually overnight. Combine the wrong food with overfeeding PLUS a low exercise regimen and you'll have an overweight pet in no time flat. A lot of people get dogs as part of a commitment to their own health, pledging hours of the next decade (at least!) to walking their dog up to four times a day. While four times a day is certainly not the norm, two long walks a day should really help with jump starting weight loss.

New DC Location & Greyhound Welfare

We have moved our original Takoma DC store diagonally across the street and I am proud to announce that Greyhound Welfare will be our first adoption event in the new (bigger and better) store. Believe it or not, 11 years ago when we opened our store, they were our first adoption event also, so this is a re-birth of our store with expanded services, built on long-standing relationships which we will continue to foster in the Communities we serve. Blue Buffalo has supported all of our adoption events over the past 2 years, and this is no exception, with 20% off all Blue Buffalo products all day at both of our locations. New DC Location: 6960 Maple St NW, Washington DC 20012

Who Rescued Whom?

This man adopted a rescue dog, who saved his life and helped him lose enough weight to run a marathon. Eric O’Grey weighed 300 pounds six years ago - he says him and his dog Peety rescued each other. Posted in The Telegraph, March 10, 2016 by Helena Horton

The Honest Kitchen ~ Small 2016 Price Increase on Some Products

From the founder of The Honest Kitchen: "We pride ourselves on obtaining the best ingredients for our products and work hard to ensure that price increases on our products remain minimal. Unfortunately several key ingredients have risen this year and we’re unable to absorb all of the additional expenses that have been incurred. In efforts to be transparent with our customers, below are some of the reasons behind our price increases. Most notably, chicken, turkey and egg prices have escalated, due in part of the effects (and ongoing threat) of avian influenza that have affected flocks across the country. We’ve also seen a considerable increase in the cost of some of our fish treats due to increased price of raw materials, a surge in Icelandic wages and other import expenses.

Don't Forget About Calcium

One of the most common mistakes that people make when feeding a home-cooked diet is the failure to add calcium. You must add calcium when you feed a diet that does not include bones. Adult dogs need around 800 to 1,000 mg of calcium per pound of food fed. They also require the calcium to be supplied in a proper proportion to phosphorus.
