Good Nutrition for All!
When we opened our first store in Takoma DC, we know that we wanted to bring to our retail establishment the same principles we used in our personal lives. This meant having a strong focus on good nutrition and on helping educate people about where their food comes from and what an impact it can have on the health and well-being of them and their family, including their pets.
The issue is always what can we do to help us and our companions thrive?
We believe by shopping locally and procuring foods from good sources that has a positive impact on the community at large, and can be the difference between illness and wellness.
This area of the site is devoted to information on good food and nutrition.
Farmers markets are a great way to shop local and support both local and regional farms in the area. There are a number of great farmers markets in the DC metro area happening almost every day of the week.
We would be re-miss not to highlight our own Takoma Park Farmers Market, where we have developed strong relationships with many of the local farmers in the area. Open Sundays year round on Laurel Ave.
CSAs are Community Supported Agriculture programs. Basically, the programs allow individuals to become shareholders of a farm. The farm produces organic, seasonal produce which shareholders can pick up on regular basis. This way, people who live in the city have access to the freshest, most sustainable foods that are grown in the rural areas surrounding the city. For more information, including pick-up locations, prices and membership details, go to Local Harvest.
We are a drop off point for 5 a Day CSA - a wellness focused CSA with organically grown fruits and vegetables . In our weekly Wellness share , we pack organically grown fruit and vegetables to help your family eat and live well. You can build your own share with our pick your item option in our webstore. If you are not already growing your own food there are many resources in this area to help you with all types of urban farming. You can even raise your own chickens and we will keep them healthy with our Countryside Organics Chicken Feed!
