Local Farms - Supporting a Local Economy

At The Big Bad Woof, we make it a point to purchase goods from local sustainable farms to support a strong local economy. We also feel that working with local farms by promoting their activities, and sharing with them helps us become better stewards of the land.

Smith Meadow Farms

gg300We have been procuring beef, lamb and chicken organ meats and bones from Smith Meadows Farm for years. They are located in Berryville Va, and are have stands at many farmers markets in the area.

“At Smith Meadows, we take great pride in our mission to create a healthy farm environment, thereby producing healthy and contented animals.

Our cattle, pigs, goats sheep and chickens are regularly rotated to a fresh paddock of grass. All of our animals are handled humanely from the day they are born. They are never fed animal by-products, given growth hormones or antibiotics.”

Ayrshire Farm

CertifiedHumaneNot only do we carry bones and organ meats from Ayrshire Farm, we also carry The Furry Foodie raw diets for dogs & cats. Ayrshire Farm’s mission is to farm sustainably and profitably, promoting the benefits of locally produced, humanely raised meats and organic produce to the local consumer community through education, outreach and example.

Historic Ayrshire is unique in the region as a working farm that has met the 21st Century with one foot firmly planted in the 19th. The Farm is a certified organic farm, specializing in rare and endangered breeds livestock and heirloom fruits and vegetables. It is a working manor farm, historically a place of efficiency, sufficiency, and serenity.

Heritage Hollow Farm

HeritageHollowMike and Molly Peterson founded Heritage Hollow Farms in late 2013, incorporating Mount Vernon Grassfed which operated as a 100% Grass Fed & Grass Finished Beef & Lamb and Pastured Pork farm for over a decade. The Petersons purchased the business and entered into a long-term lease on the land in October 2013.

The Big Bad Woof is proud to sponsor Heritage Hollow Farms as a Trustee for their Kiva Zip loan in October 2014.

The average age of U.S. farm operators increased from fifty-five in 2002 to fifty-seven in 2007. In that same time, the number of farmers under twenty-five years of age decreased by 30%.

  • Small farms are disappearing to make room for new developments and large, industrial farm operations.
  • Unsustainable farming practices are one of the major factors contributing to environmental degradation like erosion, polluted waterways, and a changing climate.

There is a need to engage the farm community, beginning farmers, and the public to show that small-scale, sustainable farming can be economically viable, beneficial to the environment, and a source of healthy food for the community.
